Occupied Mind and Attention
Explanations > Perception > Attention > Occupied Mind Description | Example | Discussion | So what?
DescriptionWhen we are attending to something, we may easily be distracted if the subject is too easy to understand. If, however, our minds are fully occupied by the subject in question, then it is hard to think of other things. When the mind is occupied, it also stops the person thinking of objections. ExampleAn advertisement contains lots of text, descriptions, photographs to engage the reader. A fast-talking sales person works on the idea of non-stop talking to stop the customer thinking even of leaving. DiscussionOccupying the mind is a kind of reversal of the simplicity principle, where things are made easier to understand. This makes use of the investment principle, where the more effort the person invests in the situation, the more they feel ownership and the more they realize they will have lost if they do not follow up on this investment. So what?Sustain attention by giving the person plenty to think about. See also
