When we talk with others, the style of the conversation can vary widely, based on the power and purpose of the people involved. When a powerful person has the purpose of getting something done, they may well dictate. When people are of similar power and want to win an argument, they may resort to debate. When people have a more collaborative informational purpose, they will likely openly discuss their questions. When decisions are to be made, deliberation may be used, either by one powerful party or as a collaborative exercise. And when we want to get to know each other better as equals, then dialog is a powerful way of doing this. The five Ds are explained in more detail in the pages below:
