Gate 3 is the third gate in the 4D change project framework and happens at the end of the Definition phase. Passing Gate 3 allows the project into the Delivery phase, approving necessary resources for this work.

All deliverables have been completed and are ready for deployment.

All deliverables have been tested against specifications and criteria. A test report may indicate the results of tests.

Deliverables fit for purpose

The deliverables are likely to be effective in use. The opportunity for human error in the deliverables has been minimized.

Deployment planned

Who will use what and when is planned on a deployment timeline.

Support ready

If the product needs ongoing support and maintenance, this is planned and resourced.

Communication and commitment planned

Communication may be about what is going to happen and when, who is affected, etc.

Commitment planning includes detail of how buy-in will be achieved.

Education planned and ready

Where needed, appropriate training, documentation, etc. may be defined.

Handover planned and agreed

At the end of the Delivery phase the work will need to be handed over to ‘business as usual’.

Ready for next stage

Project resources are identified and allocated, including the project manager, team member.

Appropriate documentation complete

Documents produced in this stage will vary greatly with project.

Functional manager agrees with plan

The key functional manager(s) involved agree with the plan of action and are ready to provide defined collaboration, for example allocating people to needed work.

Executive sponsor agrees with plan

The executive sponsor agrees with the plan, and is ready to provide appropriate high-level support.
