Leadership and Liberation
Book reviews > Leadership and Liberation
Now and again, when you thought you had a good handle on a subject a book arrives that takes a new angle, showing you new and valuable insights into the topic. Seán Ruth is an Organizational Psychologist who spent time in academia. This is reflected in the content which has a strong basis in published research. The role of the leader is considered from the view of a number of directions, including Greenleaf's Servant Leadership. Dysfunctional effects around leadership are also considered, including false hopes, envy, transference and attacks on leaders who do not come up to an idealized scratch. The main thrust of the book related to its title starts in the consideration of oppression and its effects, and the consequent opportunities for leaders (particularly those with social concerns) to liberate the oppressed. Although academic in style, the book is targeted at operational leaders and includes stimulating reflections at the end of each chapter. It is not a lightweight read, nor is it terminally academic. Leaders who appreciate this book the most will be those who are seeking to combine a sound approach with a serious challenge within a socially responsible light.
