Christmas nostalgia

So this is Christmas, as somebody once sang. I've been through a few now yet I still look forward to it. It's a long way down from playing card games with the family, a maudlin nostalgic thought if ever there was one. I can still smell the turkey and hear my grandparents' laughter and delight just to have their family together. I was once given a ten shilling note, which was a fair sum then, and my grandfather gave me twenty pennies in exchange for it. It seemed like a good deal to me, at some nigh and tender years, and it caused great hilarity amongst the family. After I figured what had happened, it took some persuasion to get the note back -- perhaps that is where I started thinking about how to changing mind.

As I write this, there's a service of nine carols and readings from King's College Chapel in Cambridge on television. More nostalgia. The readings echo strongly of junior years and Christmas services in the local church. I was a choir boy back then. I've no idea how good or bad I was at singing, but we had a good time and got up to all sorts of mischief, but were still so naive. I remember being told I was innocent and wishing I wasn't. Sadly, it's a one-way trip to knowledge, though if you try hard, you can still invoke those perfect times.

As I reached my more cynical teens, I often went for a long walk on Christmas afternoon, up the mountain. We were lucky enough to live on the border of the Brecon Beacons national park and you could walk all day and see only a few people. It beat watching the circus with snoozing aunts and sozzled old folks and I spent glorious afternoons up in the sharp, cold air with assorted dogs. It was a beautiful place to stroll and think and wonder about the world. I'm still wondering, but I hope I've learned a few things in the intervening years.

Since then, the welter of the years has seen my own children grow up, but they're still with us for today, which is nice. This year we also have the remaining member of the older generation, a sprightly lady of eighty-something who is fast approaching venerable. I'd like to be venerable some time, but not yet. There's lots more wondering to do.

So wherever you are and whatever your persuasion, have a delightful time, now and in the brief slice of eternity you have here. Find your meaning where you can and enjoy as much as possible. Change minds for the better and especially your own.

Have a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Dave
