Description

Start by greeting your audience. Say hello. Ask how they are.

Then pause, listen and watch. Some people may reply. Others will nod and smile. Some may seem bored and disinterested.

Example

Hello everyone! Are you having a good time today? Did you enjoy the lunch?

Discussion

Greeting is a cultural ritual that appears differently but is common around the world. By starting the presentation with a greeting, you trigger an automatic response and so create a greater bond with the audience.

You can also greet your audience before you start (this is not really a presentation opener). One way to do this is to stand at the door and shake their hands as they enter the room. Another way to greet them before the presentation is to more casually say hello within the room and perhaps chat with a few. As with the opener, this can help you feel more comfortable and give you useful information about them.
