Description

When you are giving a presentation in a new location it is often a good idea to take time to meet the people who are involved at the location. This is particularly true if you are the organizer or you are the only speaker.

People you may want to meet include:

  • Organizers who are doing much of the preparation, getting things set up, etc., and who will help you and who you may want to influence in various ways.
  • Receptionists who can help you find things and who will direct delegates to you and your presentation.
  • Technicians who will set up your presentation, lights, computers, audio systems, etc. If things go wrong, you will need help from these people at short notice.
  • Caterers who will bring coffee and food at the time you need them.
  • Other speakers with whom you may want to compare notes, plan linkages within presentations, etc.

Example

I am giving a presentation at my normal place of work. I go down early to the technician's room for a chat and a cup of coffee with them and to explain my needs. Later, when a microphone fails, I have Bill's number already in my phone and he turns up quickly to put things right.

Discussion

In giving a presentation, you may be the star of the stage, but there are many others who help you get there and help you succeed. Getting to know these people can pay dividends.

These people are often under-appreciated and ignored, and a speaker who shows interest, respect and real appreciation is likely to be thanked through extra attention and support.
