  One of the very best books on organizational culture. Intelligent and detailed understanding of what culture is, rather than a list of cultural attributes. Includes significant chapters on how leaders shape culture.

 Edgar Schein, The Corporate Culture Survival Guide, Jossey Bass, 1999

  More classic work from Schein. This time on effectively assessing and changing culture. Classifies culture particularly in terms of artefacts, tacit values and shared assumptions.

 John Kotter, Corporate Culture and Performance, Free Press, 1992 

Results of a solid study of corporate culture, where it is found that a strong culture alone is not enough for success. For example culture must also align with market forces.

  A useful book on organizational culture, including Deal and Kennedy's famous sociability/solidarity model. Good linkage to general cultural aspects of tribes, heroes and rites and rituals. Originally published in 1982.

 Charles Handy, Gods of Management: The Changing Work of Organizations, Oxford University Press, 1996

  A nice take on culture, casting it in the typology of ancient gods, from on of the greatest gurus of modern management.

Charles Hampden-Turner and Fons Trompenaars, Riding the Waves of Culture: Understanding Diversity in Global Business, McGraw-Hill,  1997

  One of the classics of modern international cultural differences. Includes details of research and results of survey that is the basis of Trompenaars' cultural model. Update of the original by Trompenaars alone published in 1993.

Richard Lewis, When Cultures Collide, Nicholas Brealey, 2000 

  A useful and detailed book about managing across cultures, including over 150 pages on intercultural management (a book in itself!) plus separate chapters on characteristics of 44 different countries.

Terri Morrison, Wayne A. Conaway, George A. Borden, Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands: How to Do Business in Sixty Countries, Adams Media Corporation, 1995 

   A thick book designed for the international traveller, with background and bullet points on 60 countries around negotiating, meeting, entertaining, gifts, dress and body language.
