Rim lighting and godliness

I was watching a video of the singer Dido recently and was quite taken by the lighting effects which cast a glowing rim of white light around her silhouette whilst everything else was bathed in blue light. It was wonderfully evocative and I wondered if there was a deliberate Virginal construction in the scene? Certainly Dido is young, pretty and carries an air of innocence in her manner.

Pop stars and other celebrities have always been deified by their admirers who seek perfection with which they can associate, perhaps to introject some of that godly wonder. Stages are raised not just so the stars can be seen by all but also as a literal and figurative pedestal that puts them above us, yet in a nearby place towards which we can reach.

Lighting has also been taken to new heights with repetitive, trance-inducing transitions and brilliant, awe-inspiring displays that illuminate and beatify the stars on stage.

Cynically, one might consider this as crass commercial exploitation. Personally, I think it's one of the most glorious experiences you can get without chemical assistance.

Oh, Dido!
