Not for sale

I was recently tickled by an advert that had a picture of houses with 'Not for sale' boards outside them and an invitation to join the club, there was a cut-out poster for you to stick in a window if you wanted to join the fun. There was even a website at http://notgoinganywhere.co.uk.

Of course it had to be more than a prankster paying for the ad and so I searched the page diligently and was rewarded with the name of the advertised in a corner: IKEA, the retail furniture warehouse.

The fact that I read the whole ad and am blogging about it now is testament to its efficacy. Wit and intrigue are powerful tools in attracting attention and making the reader feel good. It also creates buzz, as this blog may be doing. How many readers will relay this story further? How many will feel good about IKEA and visit their stores?

Bottom line: You don't have to sell to sell. .
