Invisible Reminders

DescriptionTell the people in very subtle ways to give a tip. One way to do this is to have an old painting on the wall of a rich person giving money to a poor person, or to have such pictures on the table place-mats. Another way is to play music where the lyrics are about being kind and generous to others. Ensure the music is up-beat, by the way, not a miserable dirge. A neat way is to engineer the word 'tip' into your language. Remember that there are many different meanings of the word. Emphasize the phrase 'give tip', even if the words are spread out. Can I give you a tip? Try holding the implement in a fist -- there, that's better isn't it? Here, can I give you this. Careful, don't tip the glass. DiscussionInvisible reminders have to be that: invisible. If you are too unsubtle, you will just annoy your customers and they will be less likely give a good tip (in fact the only tip you might get is that you should be less obvious). Invisible reminders work because most of our minds are unconscious and we are constantly taking in sights and sounds that we do not consciously process but which still have an effect. It is not really surprising, as the conscious is linear and time-bound, whilst the unconscious can process far more data simultaneously.
