DescriptionThe Schizoid Personality occurs where a person is indifferent to others, living apart from them. Noticeable symptoms may include:
The schizoid personality appears more in men than women. DiscussionLike several other conditions, the schizoid person is not particularly empathetic about other people. Their saving grace, however, is that they do not want anything from others either, and so generally ignore them wherever possible. The schizoid personality may hence be a person of few words, taciturn and aloof. They may well seek solitary work where they do not need to collaborate with others or where their co-workers are similarly focused on the work and make little attempt at building interpersonal relationships. Others may well see the schizoid personality as a loner, largely harmless but perhaps annoying in the lack of responsiveness to motivationally-intended actions. Their internal world is their own and they do not need to share it. It may be quite logical and it may be richly fantastical. Either way, it provides enough stimulation for the schizoid personality. Women are generally known to have a greater focus on relationships whilst men attend more to tasks. This may well be a significant influence on the greater number of men with a schizoid personality. The Schizoid Personality Disorder is one of the ten DSM-IV personality disorders. People with this condition are often relatively happy and self-contained and so do not seek treatment. The schizoid personality is very different from the schizotypal personality. It is even more different from schizophrenia, where the sufferer often cannot tell the difference between internal and external worlds. See also
